All health insurance options are offered through United Healthcare and are available for you and your family. While we do provide a generous contribution with a lower premium, we do not assist with contributions for family members.
The week before your assignment is scheduled to start, you will receive onboarding information from our payroll processor, Workday. You will be able to enter direct deposit information and elect benefits as part of the onboarding process. Your insurance coverage begins on the first day of your assignment.
You have 30 days from your start date to elect or decline benefits. After this window, you will not be able to enroll in benefits unless you experience a Qualifying Life Event.
Medical, dental, and vision plans
Nomad offers three medical plans, as well as dental and vision coverage, all through United Healthcare.
Coverage starts on day one of your assignment. You will have the opportunity to select your coverage plan about one week before your assignment starts.
Your Nomad Navigator can share more specifics about the details. Here is a basic overview of those plans:

401(k) retirement plan
You are eligible for a 401(K) plan through Principal starting on the first day of your assignment. Health professionals can enroll directly through Principal here. Non-stipend wages are eligible for a contribution, i.e. wages earned from time worked (or on call).
Housing, meals, and incidental per diem stipends are not eligible wages. However, you can contribute up to 100% of your eligible wages. You can change your contribution amount as frequently as you would like.
Nomad offers an employer match for our health professionals who meet the below requirements:
- Been employed with Nomad for at least 12 months
- Completed at least 1,000 service hours with Nomad.
The 12-month period starts from your original assignment start date, so if you take breaks between assignments, you will not be penalized. For qualifying health professionals, Nomad will match 50% of the first 3% of contributions per paycheck, and this employer matches vests immediately.
Negligence/Malpractice insurance
As an employee of Nomad Health, you are covered under our professional liability insurance policy with The Medical Protective Company.
The limits of insurance are $2,000,000 per claim and $4,000,000 in the aggregate.
Should you receive any legal paperwork, summons, complaint, incident report, or the like arising from patient care that you provided while working with Nomad Nurses, Inc., please send it to your Nomad Navigator within 48 hours of receipt so that we can assist you in the appropriate response.
Paycheck deductions
Deductions are made weekly, for up to four pay periods within a month. If a month has five pay periods, the fifth paycheck will not be deducted.
Weekly deductions are typically for the same amount each week, but they will automatically be adjusted if you were covered for a period of time when you were not receiving a regular paycheck.
Coverage in-between assignments
If you have accepted a new Nomad assignment that starts within two weeks of your current assignment’s end date, you will not experience any interruptions to your insurance coverage.
If the break between assignments is longer than two weeks, your coverage will end with your current contract and you will be able to re-elect benefits for your next contract.
During the time in between assignments, you will have the option to continue your coverage through Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). COBRA allows employees to continue to receive benefits under their employer’s group health plans after losing coverage due to termination. Should you elect coverage your new effective date will be the day following the date your coverage was terminated. Employees pay their entire premium, plus an administrative fee.
